Student Success Stories

Karabo Motshabi

I am Karabo Motshabi from Welkom, Free State. After I finished my matric in 2021, I applied to universities and TVET Colleges in 2022 but was not accepted anywhere. I stayed at home feeling sorry for myself, unsure of what to do next. Then, my sister approached me and told me about Thabiso Skills Development Centre and its affordable courses.

At first, I didn’t believe her, but I decided to do some research. What I saw amazed me, and I became eager to register for a course. However, I couldn’t register immediately because of my home situation. My mother is the breadwinner, and everyone depends on her, so I understood that I needed to help her and take responsibility. My mother encouraged me to have faith and promised to help me. She gave me some money so I could register for a course at Thabiso Skills Development Centre. I also managed to find a part-time job, which allowed me to contribute to my family and support myself a bit.

In April 2022, I went to Thabiso Skills Development Centre to register. The process was quick – much faster than I expected. I paid the registration fee, and I was enrolled in the Office and Business Administration course. They provided me with more information about their programmes, and I learned that they offer transport for youth to the centre. They explained that as youth we have opportunities to explore and grow and that the centre aims to empower us.

During my training, I learned how an administrator communicates effectively, as well as technical skills like office duties, prioritising tasks, managing meetings, and keeping company records safe. I also learned how to represent a company professionally, knowing that I am the face of the organization.

After completing my training, I worked for about six months at Hand in Hand, helping at schools, old age homes, and clinics. When that contract ended, I enrolled at Universal College Outcomes to study for a year. After finishing my studies, I received a call inviting me to participate in a Childline training programme.

I started selling perfumes to support myself, until I received another call from the municipal office – I had been selected for an EDTP SETA Learnership in Technical Support.

Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to believe in myself and to never give up on my dreams. No matter the obstacles, I understand that I must keep pushing. I also learned that I shouldn’t let others belittle or define me. It is important to believe in what I want and work hard to achieve it.

Every day is a blessing, and I now know that success comes through perseverance, self-belief and showing others what I am capable of.
