I am Matolwandile Majikija, and I live in Stentelina Village in Welkom.
Like many others in my community, I faced the harsh reality of unemployment, and due to financial challenges, I couldn’t afford to register for any formal training. But then something amazing happened – thanks to the generous support from Absa, I was able to register at Thabiso Skills Development Centre. This opportunity truly changed my life. In June 2024, I enrolled in the Catering course and I followed my passion further by taking part in the Carpentry course in February 2025.
My journey started with the Life Skills programme, and I can honestly say that it was a life-changing experience. We were taught how to face everyday challenges, how to build trust in ourselves and others, and how to grow into strong, confident individuals ready to take on the world.
What made this experience even better was that free transport was provided daily, making it easy and stress-free to attend.
In the Catering course we were taught kitchen health and safety, baking and cooking and all the techniques to use. I enjoyed the training and my facilitator was helpful and a great mentor. In the Carpentry course, I learned how to install ceilings, add insulation, manufacture cupboards, and so much more. It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that come with having a skill – I no longer saw obstacles, only opportunities.
I also took part in the Small, Medium and Microenterprise training at Thabiso, where I gained valuable knowledge on how to start and manage my own business. The training empowered me to dream bigger and take action.
Today, I am proudly self-employed, offering services like cupboard and ceiling installations in my community. Not only am I building a future for myself, but I’m also able to support my family – something that brings me so much joy and purpose.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Thabiso Skills Development Centre and Absa for believing in people like me and for investing in my future. You didn’t just give me a skill – you gave me hope.
To anyone out there who feels lost or unsure of their next step – my advice is simple: Register at Thabiso Skills Development Centre. You will discover your purpose, your direction, and your strength. Thank you, Thabiso – you’ve helped me to prepare more than a meal or build a cupboard, you’ve helped me build a better life.
